No matter the candidate you voted for, I think we’re all elated to see election 2016 come to an end. For many this election has left you tired, emotionally drained, and unable to listen to any more politicians or political rhetoric. Hey, I’m right there with you. The morning of Nov. 8th left me mostly speechless; it also left me relieved. We’ve made our decision, and now it’s time to move forward. But, before we dive head first into 2017, I think it’s beneficial we all take some time for ourselves. This world will be moving fast next year, and tensions will be unpredictable. The best way to prepare for chaos is to take a moment and invest in yourself.
Unplug From Social Media
You should have done this the day after the election. If you haven’t, do yourself a favor and unplug. Everyone has an opinion, especially about things they don’t understand. By feeling overwhelmed and unplugging, you’re taking back control. Not all rhetoric is toxic, but you can’t afford to have toxicity around you right now. We need to surround ourselves with love, peace, and tranquility. You don’t always have to be on, or ‘woke’. You can just…be. Live in silence for a bit and remember what life is about.
Love Yourself More Than You Love Your Opinion
Pride is natural. We all have it. In this political landscape, it feels damn good to prove your point. Being proud in your opinion can feel empowering. It also is addicting. The thrill of being right isn’t always, well, right. When you place your vanity aside, you allow for more openness in your life.
Netflix Needs To Be Your Friend More Than Ever
I’ve always had a special connection to television and film. This obsession leads me to watch Netflix quite a bit. But, who doesn’t? I can’t praise Netflix enough for creating escapism in the comfort of my own home. Getting lost in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II on Crown, or diving into the oppressed, ghettos of New York in The Get Down has lifted my spirits more than I can count. Netflix creates the perfect space to relive your childhood or learn something new; it creates a safe place to expand your mind.
Be Present With People Who Matter
With an unpredictable future ahead of us, it’s time to slow down and invest in those around you. Take a trip, schedule a FaceTime, or plan a night of drinks and laughter with those who matter. Don’t just exist in this world and do what the ‘cool’ people are doing. Are there even cool people anymore? There’s no such thing as a life that’s better than yours. Take this opportunity to learn more about those around you and truly work on cultivating those personal relationships for the future.
Make Your Own Plan for the Future
Everyone is talking about what you should do, who you should stand behind and how you should act going forward. There’s a lot of noise around our futures, but you can’t give into it. You can’t listen to everyone else. If there was ever a time to sit down and figure out what you want out of this seemingly cold world, it’s right now.
